Question:
My Passport Is Expired?
2013-08-19 14:53:09 UTC
Hello. I live in Canada and I am hoping to go back to school shopping on the 23rd in USA but the problem is that my passport has expired in July.
What can I do? Can I bring a birth certificate or any other form of identification?
I am travelling by car btw.
Thank you for your help :)

No. US law requires American and Canadian citizens over the age of 15 to have a valid passport, NEXUS pass, or an enhanced driver's license to enter the United States.

All passports are scanned. If your passport has expired it will popup on the agent's screen if they don't manually notice it. US citizens might be allowed to return to the US if they have proof their passport was stolen (i.e. a police report or letter from the US consulate). Canadian citizens will not be permitted into the US without one of these.

If you apply in person in Canada you can get a passport renewed in 10 business day. You can also get it in 2-9 business days if you apply in person and pay for express service and is as little as 24 hours if you have proof of an emergency.

In order to enter the US you will need a valid passport or valid passport card (land and sea travels), a NEXUS card or enhanced Driver's License especially if you are 16 years and older. If you are younger then you need your birth certificate for the travel and entry. Otherwise, you need to renew your passport. You can have it as Rush or expedited but you need to pay more because of the fees. You can actually get it as fast as within 24 to 48 hours depends on the reason of emergency.

No, you need a passport. You can pay $50 for express pick-up (2 to 9 business days) or $110 for urgent pick-up (24 hours). These fees are in addition to the usual passport fee.

Since your passport expired in July you can use the simplified passport application form, which means you just need to bring that expired passport and two new passport photos.

Notes on urgent and express pick-up:

Urgent services are not available at:

Canada Post and Service Canada receiving agents; or

Passport Canada offices in Pointe-Claire, Whitby, Brampton, Calgary South, Kelowna and Richmond.

Standard pick-up and Express services are not available at:

Canada Post and Service Canada receiving agents; or

the Pointe-Claire Passport Canada office.

You may apply for pick-up or express service at the Passport Canada offices in Whitby, Brampton, Calgary South and Richmond, but you will be required to pick up your passport at another location to be confirmed when you submit your application.

At the Kelowna Passport Canada office: In-person service (10 working days) and express service (4 to 9 working days) are available.

What can you do? You can get your butt to the nearest passport office to submit an application for a new passport. If you pay a bit extra you can have it in a few days. If you don't live near a passport office you have the choice of either driving to one or submitting the application via the mail and hoping for the best. Its a shame you were not more attentive to something so important.

You will be refused at the border if you do not have a valid passport or driving licence enhanced with a computer chip.

If you are under 16 years of age you can use a birth certificate with a letter of permission from your parents.

I'd say your chances are somewhere between extremely slim and absolute zero, much closer to absolute zero.

I actually got across the border without a passport (couldn't find it), but that was a really rare exception they made for me. I was with my wife and kids and they all had their valid passports, so they brought in a supervisor and detained me for a while. I had to show all my other ID (they verified that I held a valid passport) and answer a butt-load of questions, and they OK'd me because they didn't want to ruin a whole family vacation because of one technicality. The supervisor explained that she was in a really good mood that night and was impressed by my polite attitude. They also warned me that no future exemptions would ever be made for me, and in the midst of me thanking them my wife found my passport in the truck.

You, on the other hand, don't have a valid passport (it's expired) and only want to border-hop to do some discount shopping. Your chances are really really close to zero.

Nope. You need your passport, an enhanced driver's license or a Nexus card. If you live in a city that has a passport office, you could pay extra to rush the renewal, but I still don't think it would arrive in time.

Get a passport at first.

How old are you, and are your parents going with you? If you are under 16 and they are with you, you only need your birth certificate. If you are 16 or over, you can use an enhanced driver's license.

Shayla, you do not mention your age, but regardless, common sense would alert you to renew your passport, it is as simple as that.
