If I am not good at identifying some colours, can I still get a drivers license (Canada)?

When I mean not good, I mean like seeing sort of the difference between Magenta and Pink. I can easily identify Orange, Yellow, Red, Blue, Green, Black, etc. And I know that traffic lights here are Red, Yellow, and Green. Will I be allowed to obtain a drivers license. I've heard that you can't if you're colour blind or deficient

You will take an eye test with your drivers test. The eye test will have a colour blind component. Basically shown a bunch of coloured dots and asked if you see a number or image in them. If you pass that test you qualify for driving.

Yes. I know someone who cannot differentiate between red and green. He has a driver's licence and must be getting around okay on the road since he has been riding motorcycles for 30 years and hasn't had any accidents. If you can easily identify red, blue, yellow and green, you are probably not actually colour blind. I suspect it's more likely that you just aren't sure what to call the colours you are seeing when it comes to ones with small differences. Drivers do not need to see small differences. All the traffic signs and signals I can think of, including signs that are strictly for information and not for safety, use white, black, red, green, yellow/orange, blue and sometimes brown. To drive safely, you are never going to need to know the difference between pink and magenta, or kelly green and lime green.

They test your level of colour blindness. The most common form of colour blindness is RED and GREEN that is why ALL traffic lights have some BLUE in the lens so that COLOUR BLIND can see the lights.

Can you see the different coloured lights of a traffic signal? It is a YES or NO question. Well sort of or depends is not the answer if you want to drive. Try the test given by Jaun there are others you can try online. To the best of my knowledge there are no PINK traffic lights or road signs.

The colors of traffic lights are always in a standard position. Red is always on top, green on bottom & yellow in between. On a horizontal bar green is on the right in countries that drive on the right side of the road. Yellow is always between red and yellow.



A person who saw no colour at all could still learn to read traffic lights. Traffic lights are not just for drivers - pedestrians and even service dogs depend on them to cross safely.

That's all you need. Bet I'd have a hard time decifiering majenta from pink also, or violet from purple... but I sure can distinuash a red/green light, a yellow caution or a blue school crosswalk sign.
