Uh oh...

You may encounter many problems if you are planning to cross the border in a rental car as some rental companies will not allow renters to drive their rental cars across the border. I would advise you to check with the rental company before you rent a car.

According to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp Japanese citizens do not require a visa to visit Canada. However, your friend will need a passport.

Good luck

As a US citizen , you need a passport if you are flying but not if you're driving. Don't know about your friend but he'll have a passport with him anyway. Holiday visitors don't usually need visas. I always bring a passport when crossing the border whether they say I need it or not.

i do not go with to go back off as a prick and that i do not understand the answer for your question yet you fairly should not be searching for that answer right here. they're so so strict because of the undeniable fact that is with individuals crossing to and fro that we can in ordinary words wish they could be stricter with people from Pakistan and the middle East mostly. you should call the right authority to confirm you get the great suggestion, you does not go with your cousins to be stopped on the border and stuck there being unable to flow because they don't have the right documentation.

Citizens of Japan just need their passport to enter Canada. NO visa.

Traveling this year by car you as a US citizen don't need a passport. But you have one so it makes sense to use it.
