I think you can get a train from Chicago to Detroit & at the border switch over to a VIA rail train into Southern Ontario.

Yes, there are trains that run from Ontario to the US. VIA Rail is the website to look for the routes. In the US, it's Amtrak. I wouldn't count on it being cheaper than flying. The bus might be better for price.
