Michelle is absolutely right. You need a thick skin. Surveys are easier but not much easier. The easiest one I did were surveys to already established customers to get information on the service they were receiving and possible improvements - most people agree to do that for business outlets they already use. I have used it as a fill in job or a second income - short term. Marketing companies go through a lot of employees - the turnover is wild. If you do not leave on bad terms and if you give notice when you do leave, it is usually good for a reference which may or may not be important to you. The other plus to this type of work is it is relatively easy to get the job.

Hope this helps. :o)

Both ladies are right, after i got out of the hospitality business I took a number of computer course and ended up my first jobs was for Microsoft's MSN in the US, we dealt with them from Canada, and because of my background I took all type of calls, mainly we dealt with the accounts for the internet service, and you know the American's we had some dozey's, some wanted out of the contracts when they bought there discounted computers and got the service for 2-3 years and some people as the other lady's have said were not to pleased or nice when we could not sever there contract, telemarketing is a thing of the past now here with the "NO CALL" list and will be most once everyone has registered, the charity's can still call along with political pollsters.

Alot depends on the type of call centre, my sister worked at the same one I did and after a takeover they did alot of collections and customer service accounts for Rogers, Bell Expresview and others, but have slowed down and laid off alot of the workers, generally it is not a bad job, there are alot of good sides and some down, I did Technical Support for computers and printers when I first moved back here to Toronto as I have a MCSE and A+ certification for servicing, but my arthritis got the better part of me and I had to go on disability as I cannot sit for long periods, if your looking at a job in the call centre business ask questions at the interview, talk to people who have worked there, and then make your decision if its right for you.

Telemarketing for me ranks pretty low on my list of the type of calls I like to get. So if you get me on the other end of the phone, I apologize in advance for hanging up on you.

I spend my day providing telephone support for various companies, and the last thing I want when I get home after a long day (and I try to sit down and have a quiet meal or watch my favorite TV show) is to have the phone ring and someone on the other end trying to sell me something.

I used to be very polite and advise the person on the other line that I was not interested and say goodbye and hang up. But that was before I started getting several a week, sometimes 2-3 in one night!

It seems many of these agencies sell or share the names of people who they contacted who may have bought something from them, and then you start getting calls left and right.

And so now because my time is too valuable to me, I have put myself on the no-call list, and I generally let the answering machine pick up until I know it is not a telemarketer. If I do pick up, I simply hang up now as soon as I hear the start of their prepared speech.

The WORST is the companies that choose to call me by using an automated recording. If there are any companies out there using auto-dialers to reach people, please be aware that I stay on the line long enough to find out your company name, and I make sure to NEVER buy any products from you! If everyone did that, the guys offering house cleaning services, or duct cleaning, or heat pumps, or whatever they want to sell that way would most likely go out of business.

I have never done telemarketing, however i sat next to someone who did and it seemed to me like they did not enjoy being hung up on and they are required to try to keep people on the phone. Their calls are monitered. I worked in a call center ADT Security Service. for 6 years and yes it is hard if you are in customer service, because you have to be nice no matter how mean people are to you and the management does not like to take supervisor calls. sometimes it is gratifying if you can actually help someone however many times your hands are tied. I also worked in a call center where we took oreders and tracked orders i worked there for 6 months and i liked that helping people order things was kinda fun. I expect it depends on what you are doing in the call center,.
